I was able to spend

a lot of time

with my grandparents.

I would play

hide and seek

behind the porcelain.

Here I rooted myself.

I met Diane

throughout the U.S.

It was oral history.

She wanted to know what

was keeping our doors open.

Diane knew I'd been away

for three years.

I shadowed her

for three months.

I learned to listen

and to learn.

I learned to frame.

Everybody I talked to

was being resilient.

White, affluent folks,

not part of the community.

No resilience

and no revolt.

We just continued to open up shop

everyday.
